Will My Wishes Suffice?

A piece of verse
cannot suffice
an anniversary celebration.
A line of praise
cannot compensate
thirty odd years of companionship.

Yet, when I look back
and reflect
on emotions shared,
on bonds sealed,
on memories stored
within the capsule of time,
I cannot but feel
the warmth of this unique relationship
penetrate my very soul.

Teaching the first lesson
called life,
gently holding onto
my little finger
till the tiny seed
sprouted into a sapling,
a plant and then into a tree
to miraculously provide shade
for another generation of humanity.

Today, as I observe
their wedding day
I realize that this little girl
is as old as their marriage.
That’s a lot of water
flown under the bridge of time.

The bell chimes again
ushering in another year
wherein I bow down humbly
in gratitude for the love
I received all these years.
Yet, as the wonderful day
strolls in once again
I wonder:
Will wishing one surviving parent
a happy wedding anniversary
be equivalent to opening wounds
of happy memories
that dwell in the misty corners of a lonely mind?

(On the occasion of my parent’s wedding anniversary. My mother incidentally passed away in the year 2006.)

An absolutely beautiful poem of love and remembrance.

Thank you Mary. I am glad you liked it. It has become difficult to wish my father for his wedding anniversary when my mom is no longer alive....
