If He Could, I Can : Reflecting On Independence Day

The bald head,
those branded spherical spectacles,
the white loin cloth and that lean long stick -
we identify so much with all those that symbolized freedom.
Even today, when all seems lost
when law and order is just a line on paper,
when conscience is only a fashionable word
to decorate self help journals,
the brisk steps marching with hope
seem the only way out.
If he could do it without a drop of blood or wounding word
so can we, I think.
If an entire captive nation's self-respect can be snatched back without malice and mire
so can we retain our self-respect
without resorting to hatred and hurt.
Ideals and values may appear
old-fashioned ideas
but when the boat rocks violently
amidst waves of shallow modern living
then,
these symbols of peace and principle drive us
safely back to the shore.

Remembering the senior citizen
who makes us feel alive
years after he has gone,
Let us live life the way
he always wanted -
simple, joyously and with self-respect.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Dear Shail,
That was a great verse. A solemn celebration of our hard-won freedom. I am happy I almost started the day with that verse. Thanks for giving me the links.
And Shail, I did see your pic too in that blog spot. Now I can relate your words to those inquisitive, keen eyes.
Waiting for the day when your compilation is going to be published. Reserve a copy for me.
all the best. Happy Independence day.

When we can gain Independance without shedding a blood, why can't we preserve it, in the same way.
Nice thought here, Shail.

Sure when new ideas don't work, try the old ones...another super idea!

Let us remember the senior citizen who gave our country the freedom which we enjoy now and live the way he wanted us to be..

HAPPY INDEPENDANCE DAY TO YOU SHAIL!

Simply Great Shail. This is one of your best poems. I very much like its positive tone.

Western countries are now slowly realising the value of gandhi's ideas and trying to understand and adopt them. It is high time that we realise the importance of gandhian thoughts and adopt them to our working.
