It’s Woman’s Day you say?
But I have utensils to wash and stack away.
Work to do,
No time to feel the dew.
What am I supposed to celebrate?
I am not going on a date!
I am told, Woman’s Day is to rejoice
But, poor deprived little girls have no toys,
Tender soft childish palms
Are not playing, they are asking for alms.
Every year this day comes and goes.
Nothing changes. There are friends and there are foes.
Women succeed where men fail.
Like always, the woman’s ship has set sail.
Yet, the woman today is tired proving she is good enough.
Oh! To forsake her femininity to show that she is tough.
At what cost must she do this compromise?
Just to feel contented and appear wise?
This day, for me is going to be the same.
In fact, I shall only hang my head in shame.
As I watch my countrymen trying hard to deprive
Today’s woman as she works hard to strive.
Let’s throw those rotten apples away
Before they spoil the others and a happy day.
Let’s not bow down before fear.
Let’s celebrate womanhood with our near and dear.
A toast to all women on Woman’s Day.
Nothing is impossible today.
At the fag end of every day
I shall still wash the dishes and say,
HAPPY WOMEN'S DAY!

A good one, Shail. I too wonder about all those women and girl for him no one day is different from another.
Ouch! Talk about driving the point home!
Very true....
Dear Shail, your poem is a stark reality.Yet,there must be one day or one occasion when we men can thank them for their love, care, hardwork, affection etc.The day at least reminds us about the importance of the women and their role in our society.Simultaneously, there cannot be any relevance in the celebrations until all women can walk safe and free at any time in any and every street in India. We all have read about the shocking daylight murder of Radhika Tanwar in DU campus on Women's Day itself. We read news reports about minor girls being raped by elderly men.Women sadly are just the half of the country's vote bank for shrewed politicians. We also see how helpless and useless our police department is when it comes to preventing crime against women. The ground reality is very different. I think, true liberation will only come when change is brought about and sincerely implemented at grass-root levels, begining right from our education from childhood itself.

Very true Shail..for many women/girls, this is yet another day.
The change should come from within all of us...to truly celebrate Women's Day...then only it can also be understood that everyday is Women's Day.
(smile) this is great, Shail. An accurate portrayal of womenhood - chores, childcare, frustration yet pride in our day to day accomplishments, although not always huge change-the-world type accomplishments, collectively the small tasks we do everyday change the world more than we will ever know. here's to women everywhere! sisterly love to you all...
Thanks Sheila,
Am smiling back to You! There was no other way I could portray better a much hyped Woman's Day Celebration all over the world.
Wishing all the women all over the globe the joy of womanhood and the self respect that they truly deserve.
Dear Bhargavi,
I cannot but agree 100% with you. We need to get over the hypocrisy of celebrating a day that does not further the cause of womanhood.
Hi Jatinder,
Thanks. Yes, to celebrate the women in our lives we need to show that we care, not on just one day, but every other day.
Dear Ashwathy,
I know, it hurts, but its' true anyway. Every where on this particular day, you have a lot of hype but even more sham celebrating womanhood when women still suffer.
Thanks.
Hi Sherry,
Thanks. Good you liked this piece of verse that came straight from the heart of a woman!!
beautiful. its the reality and a hard fact that even some dont want to admit.
Thanks Praveena. Glad you liked it. Yes, not all want to accept this fact, but it sure is true and a pity really...
Really true. Women's freedom exists more in poems, fiction than in real life. There is very little awarenss of women's rights even in metros. Hoping things will change atleast in the distant future.
