Many a night
when I try hard to sleep,
Howling dogs
prey on my hidden insecurities....
Hooting owls
send me eerie messages
of forthcoming misfortune....
Blind bats
rush past me
to feed on the blood of god forsaken creatures...
During the day
when I feel free as a lark
scary scarecrows in green fields
stare at me smugly....
Black cats
send shivers down my spine
as they circle around me and mew mockingly....
Day and Night -
I am caught in the tentacles of time.
Each trying to wickedly overtake the other,
playing a dangerous game
of fun and fear
drowning all my arrogant assumptions
of my supposedly dominating presence.
Making me wonder..
Whose Halloween is it anyway?
Mine or Theirs?

Ours!
ReplyDeletemew mockingly....

Dear Shail
ReplyDeleteVery interesting one and I liked the images of your dilemma and fears in the night as well as in the day. The ending took me by surprise though... you put in lot of thought in those last three lines... thanks for sharing...

Thanks Hope. Yeah, creepy is the word. We celebrate Halloween not knowing that spirits and all those images we use to scare the world in our celebration are actually being used on us....
ReplyDeleteThanks Shashi. Nice that you liked the poem. Yes, such little fears plague a lot of people. Just put it into words to form a poem...

ReplyDeleteI like the humor in this, however, light... mew mockingly... yet some very deep questions broached here. Nice write.
ReplyDeleteThanks Reflections. That was the only way I could express Halloween in my life...
ReplyDeletePlease help giving (belated) birthday wishes to 3 or 4 fellow poets:

Shail, love the shivers and the smiles. Reminds me of a poster I saw in a church once:
ReplyDeleteSanta on one side,
Jesus on the other.
Tag line: Whose birthday is it, anyway?
Peace, Amy Barlow Liberatore
